On March 16, the FPM ASBL organized in collaboration with the Central Bank of Congo, the FPM SA, Elan RDC and FINCA RDC, a forum as part of the Global Money Week at Kongo University in Kisantu, Central Kongo. On this occasion, a television programme was organised on 15 March 2018 at the Mbuela village area in front of a sample of 25 students in the presence of the FPM, its partners and experts. The purpose of this program was to inform as many people as possible about the Global Money Week.

With the main theme “Money matters matter”, or “the importance of money issues”, the 2018 Global Money Week took place from 12 to 16 March 2018. The idea for this seventh edition was to encourage children and young people to educate themselves on money issues, create livelihoods and consider becoming entrepreneurs. For the FPM, specifically, it was about promoting the economic and social empowerment of children and youth in Kisantu, helping them to flourish on money issues, creating a positive wave in this category of the population that will extend to their families and entire communities.

Alexandre NSHUE elaborated on two questions: “Who manages money and who controls it?” and “What role do financial institutions play in money?”.

Through the sub-theme “How to use money better”, Mr Patrick NKONGO answered the main questions on the usefulness of money, in particular: how to earn money, how to save it, how to spend it and how to invest it?

The operation of remote banking was a sub-theme developed by four speakers: Mr. Jean KABONGO, as an expert on the subject, presented the advantages of remote banking by showing the limits of traditional branches; Mr. Joseph MULIMBI of FINCA, shared FINCA’s experiences with remote banking; Mr. Ali TOUVNEL and Francky LUDJU of Elan RDC spoke about the work accomplished by Elan RDC to reduce market constraints and support their institutions in developing remote banking solutions.

Following the speakers’ presentations, a question and answer session was organized to allow participants to elicit further details on the topics discussed. In order to promote interactivity through entertaining activities, a 20-minute dramatization on the importance of saving among young people was performed by the « Tout le monde » theatre group composed of doctoral candidates in the Faculty of Medicine at Kongo University.

In general, the forum on the Global Money Week “GMW” took place in optimal conditions: on the one hand the objectives were achieved and on the other hand the participants found the various interventions of the panelists interesting and expressed the desire to take part in other activities of the same kind that the FPM would organize.
